I used to believe that the generational groups that exist today were separate, distinct and forever destined to misunderstand one another. You know, I’m referring to the busters, boomers, consumers, Gen Xers, Gen Y, Echoes … need I continue?? The more I studied their age grouping and unique features, the more disheartened I became. Would this really work better by creating a silo for each group and then simply suggest that all we needed to do was “pass the baton” to the next generation?? How could we learn quicker, instead of perpetually repeating past mistakes? But what would the strategy look like so that we honoured and benefitted from each generation’s strengths? And further, with the changing face of gender in the workplace and shift of leadership authority to women, along with men … how would that play out?

This year’s Day of Hope & Leadership is on Tuesday, October 1st in the Durham Region … our theme is BALANCING THE SHIFT: Women in Leadership, Emerging Leaders and Succession Planning (mature leaders preparing and making room for those transitioning into “top spots”). This promises to be a thought provoking yet very insightful time of dialogue that is sure to significantly impact every area of our lives. While I don’t want to oversimply those three connected pieces of cord: women, young and older … I do need to tell you that I’m not sure that just “passing the baton” is the best strategy for success in 2013.

In my heart some time ago I came to a conclusion: there’s really only one generation. Those who are alive today. We need everyone. Could it be that we’re ALL to hold onto the baton in some capacity as we run forward?? We need to humbly value what each has to offer. With intentionality and openness we want to connect the pieces of the cord, discover wisdom that brings out the best of everyone but doesn’t create “another problem” in your business, family or experience. It truly is a new day, with unusual opportunity and promise. Day of Hope & Leadership is a forum where your voice can be heard. Together, let’s talk, dream and walk into our tomorrows knowing it’s what we chose, and not what we defaulted to. You owe it to your business, family, kids, grandkids and our future to be there. Dr Doug A. Schneider

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he [learn more]</a

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Integrity means we stand up for our beliefs, but we respect the beliefs of others. I am troubled these days as I see public leaders trying to portray other leaders in a negative light. I want today’s leaders to lead with a vision of what we can do a vision of a future that has answers to today’s challenges. I want a leader that talks in terms of what we can do collectively instead of criticising others.

Integrity means that we lead with values and morals that hold us to the best we can be. Honesty and truth will be the cornerstone of any leader’s main principles as they move us forward. I wish our leaders would act in ways of respecting others but many times we witness the opposite. Today, public leaders talk about leadership and rising to the occasion but act in ways that even our children know are not right.

We cannot lead in ways that tear others down. We must demand more from everyone. Let’s work together, not to lower the standards but to raise them. Let’s create ideas and visions that everyone can see – not just a few at the top. Let’s set a course that will see people from all walks of life benefit. Let’s develop leaders in every community.

We must demand that today’s leaders lead with the principles of integrity, honesty, truth and respect. When we disagree, we must disagree respectfully. Let’s be the best that we can be not the worst we seem to have become. Let us demand today that we will not reward those that use bullying tactics and negative messages to try and win points Let us commit to lead with integrity because it is in us – this is our time to lead in ways that will make us all proud Canadians. We must demand the best from all of us because we are all leaders in one way or another. I will be the first to say that I am leading with integrity because that is what I demand of myself and it is what I demand of others.

There is a shift in leadership and this is one of them. Join us at the Day of Hope and Leadership 2013 on October 1 to learn more.Dan Carter
