Well another amazing time at the Day of Hope and Leadership to be thankful for what we have and remember those who are less fortunate.
I had managed to double my $20.00 amongst my friends and have given the funds to a charity that is dear to my heart being the YWCA (Young Womens Christian Association). I wanted to show everyone how every penny counts as with the funds contributed the YWCA had sent me the following e-mail to advise me of how far these funds will go. Please see below:

Just a short note to thank you very much for your donation. I can assure you that your financial assistance will be put to good use and it will continue to benefit the women we serve here at YWCA Durham.
Just to give you a small indication of the impact you made......
1. Your donation will be used to fully clothe 8 women in either business or school attire from purchases they will make at our 2nd hand store called Adelaide’s Attic. Since this clothing will allow the women to either go to work or school, the future benefit generated from these funds is immeasurable! Not only will the clothing allow these woman to go to work and/or school which will generate future wealth, it will also give them confidence, self- respect and self-esteem; all of which are priceless.

2. The store (Adelaide’s Attic) and the donation centre in which the women will shop to purchase the clothing is staffed by our residents. On any given day, up to 5 women will volunteer their time in the door in order to gain job and life skills. Once again, taking your donation and turning it into immeasurable return as these women learn priceless life skills to support their futures.

3. Since the money you donated will be used to purchase clothing from our own 2nd hand store, the funds will go directly back into our 2nd Stage Housing program. The funds you provide will go a long way in helping to feed the women residents. In particular, we will be able to feed the 33 residents for a full day (3 meals).

4. But most importantly, you have shown the our residents, a very vulnerable sector of our population, that they matter and that people care. Often our residents are forgotten and your community mindedness has show many that people do care.

Thank you Ursula again for your contribution. We could not do what we do, without people like you.

Take good care.

This was an amazing challenge and i wish that i had more than 48 hrs to complete it. I was able to collect a total of $80 make it $100 for this challenge. My fellow staff members were very willing to participate in this challenge. We decided to donate the money to a family in our centre that has been experiencing a difficult time finacially. When the parent arrived at the centre to collect the envelope she was over come emotions at the generosity. I explained the challenge and hope that we were very happy to be of some small help.

With so many worthwhile causes, it was very difficult to decide how to spend the $20. Wanting to reach people in need in a different way than I have in the past (food banks, World Vision, youth hostels) I decided to add another $40 to the original $20 and invest with KIVA.org. It is a wonderful organization that helps people in other countries who need loans to improve their life. I have given money towards a loan to a group of women in the Dominican Republic and also towards a gentleman in Mexico. After they repay their loans in April, I will take the money and re-invest it towards other people who require a loan at that time. In repeating this process the $20 will be used over and over for years to come and help many people.

Having attended The Day of Hope and Leadership Training recently, co-worker Elaine Crossfield and I enjoyed the Inspirational Day. We attempted to grow our original $40 by asking for donations from our Co-workers at The Region of Durham Social Services Department (IESD). Co-workers were instrumental in helping us grow this amount up to $245.59. These funds were used to purchase 41 Food Bank Bags at a local Metro, donated to a local food bank for Thanksgiving.
Great job of moving it forward, from the original donation, to continued office generosity.
Thanks for the $20 start...
Sincerely,
Rosa Cannella

It took me a long time to decide what to do with my $20 because there are so many good causes out there. A couple of days ago a neighbour of mine had a fire in her kitchen. She lives in a two bedroom townhouse with her husband and two children under three years of age. This all happened while her husband was at work so she was left alone to deal with it. One of my neighbours called the fire department; one neighbour put the fire out and shut off the power to the house and another neighbour and I calmed Mom down. Everyone made it out safe and sound. I don't know if she had insurance or not but when you have small children money is always tight. I have decided to give her my $20, I just wish I could do more.

With the $20.00 challenge i decided to give it to a lady that works next door to my office. She is not working and seems mad all the time. I got her a sun flower in a vase that was decorated with a smiley face, i also gave her a $50.00 gift certificate for dinner out with her husband and the crisp $20.00 bill. After I explained why I picked her, she cried and was very eager to pay it forward. It was a good day.

No Child Should Have to Wait for Life Altering Treatment
If you have ever been lucky enough to walk down the halls of Grandview Children's Centre you will know you have visited the land of Hope for children in need. My challenge was to raise funds to
help reduce the waitlist/timeline for children to get life altering treatment. I committed to match
dollar for dollar each donation to my $20 challenge. Table 20 and other DHL alumni came through and we raised a total of $600 for the Grandview Foundation. Thank you, Gary.

My wife Cathy and I wanted to support WindReach Farm with our $40. We challenged our friends and family by telling them that we would match their donations by 50% in a 48 hour time span. WindReach Farm helps provide opportunities for persons of all ages and disabilities to enjoy experiences in a farm and natural surroundings in an inclusive, safe and welcoming environment. We all helped raise over $400 for WindReach Farm thanks to the generous support of others.

I LOVE to sail and decided to included my $20 in a pledge to Disabled Sailors of Ontario so another person, who might not have the opportunity, might learn to enjoy the sport as I do. Thanks IG!
