HOPE CENTRE OF LEARNING
The Hope Centre of Learning
The Hope Centre of Learning is a place where dreams begin, respect is shown, success is encouraged and where people are inspired to believe that anything is possible. Housed within the Oshawa Community Health Centre, it is most importantly a place where hope is always present.
The Hope Centre of Learning was designed to be a space that inspires all ages. The library contains positive impact books to encourage and motivate. We have included the latest in technology through PCs and I-Macs, software for graphics design, video editing, music and web design. The H.E.A.R.T. (Homework - Education - Activity – Reading -Together) Program is a great success and has improved literacy levels in our children significantly.
The Hope Centre is a bright, warm inviting room that is used during the day by seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. Youth use the room for after school programs and a comfortable place for homework and studying. Toddlers and their parents use the Hope Centre for Kindermusic programs. It truly encompasses all ages! Daily snack programs ensure that no one goes hungry. All of our programs are implemented by the patient and caring staff with Oshawa Community Health Centre and the Oshawa Seniors Citizens Centre.
Our goal is to help encourage those that want to learn and inspire them to follow their dreams. Each year we ask our partners to help support our programs so all of our visitors will have the opportunity to succeed.
Please email us if you would like to make a monthly commitment of $25.00 or more for one year to the Hope Centre of Learning. You can make a difference!
Isobel Carter Youth Fund
“I think that this award is better than an Academy Award because I am receiving this award for being me and I think that’s great.”
2008 Isobel Carter Award recipient
Katelyn Davis
In 2004, my mother, Isobel Carter passed away. That year I decided that I would start a fund that would follow her own spirit of unconditional love that she had passed on to me. My mother’s belief was that we should always encourage young people to succeed and teach them to reach out to others and develop compassion. We must always find a way to lead, give, share, inspire, and never give up on anyone as we are all precious gifts.
Since 2005, I have awarded The Isobel Carter Youth Award to a child under the age of 15 who demonstrates compassion and leadership unconditionally; or as my mother would say “has a good soul”. Each year one young person from Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington will receive a $500 RESP to be used in the future for their education. The award celebrates young people that show kindness of heart, a generous soul and leadership when it’s most important.
Do you know someone that you would like to nominate? If so, please send us an e-mail about your nominee so that they can be considered for the next Isobel Carter Youth Award.
2 DDSB Students Honoured with The Isobel Carter Youth Fund Award
Erin Jones of Vaughan Willard Public School and Joanna Alphonso of Lincoln Alexander Public School were honoured with the Isobel Carter Youth Fund Award on January 28, 2010. This award is not about academics, but rather the soul and character shown by these individuals.
The Isobel Carter Youth Fund Award was established in 2005, after local television personality, Dan Carter, wanted to keep his mother’s spirit alive by naming an award after her. The criteria for consideration followed his mother’s beliefs: recognize individuals who show a kind heart, offer a generous soul, and provide leadership when it is most important.
This award, which is provided in the form of a $500 RESP, is given on a yearly basis to youth (under the age of 15) who demonstrate these principles.
